Learning outcomes<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Recognize the parts of engineering assemblies that are subjected to surface mechanical\nloading, in order to calculate and re-design them for optimizing the performance of the\nintegrated mechanical system.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Select the suitable surface modification technique per bearing type, in order to assure its safe and long operation.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Use knowledge from the field of fluid mechanics in order to reliably solve problems of lubrication.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Make good use of knowledge from the fields of mathematics, statistics and numerical\nanalysis, in order to develop algorithms for the prediction of safe operation of tribo-systems.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ii. Syllabus<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The knowledge offered in the course concerns:\n\u2022 Clarification of basic concepts, like the tribo-system\u2019s definition, its main operating \nparameters and the critical materials\u2019 volumetric and surface properties affecting its \noperation.\n\u2022 Surface micro-geometry (roughness) analysis and measurement.\n\u2022 Assessment of the mechanical loading effects on surface and sub-surface layers of \nconjugated, non-moving bodies (Elasto-static theory). Movement deceleration mechanisms of bodies in contact (Friction) that increase energy \nrequirements.\n\u2022 Surface degradation mechanisms during relative motion of conjugate bodies (Wear) that \ncause mass losses.\n\u2022 Special topics on the action of solid, liquid and hybrid lubricants targeted to facilitate motion, \nwithout crucial dimensional change of bodies, leading to minimization of energy and mass \nloss.\n\u2022 Special topics on technological applications of bearing journals and their calculation.<br \/>\u2022 Surface modification techniques for enhancing the surface properties of tribo-elements.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">iv.
